VENICE CARNEVALE
By Roman Martin
Over the centuries so much has been written about the beauty and grandeur of Venice, what more can one say? And to say Venice is unique and one-of-a-kind, is an understatement.
While exploring Venice, one cannot help but be seduced by the endless photographic opportunities, and even more so during the spectacular Carnevale (Carnival), held annually in February or March.
Banned and Revived
For hundreds of years Venice was a center of culture and commerce. From the 11th century to the 18th century people wore masks, not just at Carnevale, but also to conceal their identity. Both men and women wore unique masks. The use of masks slowly died away when Napoleon conquered Venice in 1797. Then it disappeared completely in the early 20th century when Mussolini banned the use of masks. Carnevale was revived in 1979 and Venice once again became a place where one can have the world’s most extravagant fun. Today, The Venetian Carnevale consists of various masked parades – on streets and squares – and in gondolas on the canals.
Carnevale for Photographers
Carnevale should be on everyone’s bucket list, especially if you are a photographer or party goer. People from all over the world come to Carnevale. Some come to bask in the baroque festivities and take photos. And some come to participate in costume parties and dances that are held in local palaces.
Some of the palaces have played roles in well-known films such as James Bond, The Italian Job and The Tourist. Many of the masks and costumes are deeply rooted on Venetian history. There are recognizable ones like the Beaked doctor in the Black Death character. The creators of the masks display their characters in different ways and styles making each mask a one of a kind work of art.
People in the streets wear exquisite costumes, some spending a small fortune. These are some reasons that it is such an unforgettable experience to be on the streets of Venice during Carnevale, regardless of the weather. People in costumes are eager to be photographed and you’ll be sure to return home with stunning images.
