SURYAGARH JAISALMER
(Our Preferred Hotel in Jaisalmer, India)
By Michael Chinnici
YOUR GATEWAY TO THE THAR DESERT
Suryagarh is not just a hotel, it represents a unique way of life, carefully preserving the traditions of the past yet framing them in a modern idiom. The hotel takes the path less travelled and discovers with you, secrets of a land that have been long shrouded in myth and legend. With great consideration to your comfort, Suryagarh’s brand of hospitality is intuitive and genuine.
Suryagarth is our preferred hotel in Jaisalmer for various reasons. First, because it perfectly frames Jaisalmer Fort in the distance. Second, the architecture and details are a photographic treasure. And third, for it’s well appointed decor, deep in tradition and consistent with the history of the region.
One ventures to Jaisalmer for Jaisalmer Fort and the isolated Thar Desert. Located on the western frontier of Rajasthan. The fort is believed to be one of the very few (perhaps the only) “living forts” in the world, as nearly one fourth of the old city’s population still resides within the fort. For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer. Made of yellow sandstone, the fort has withstood earthquakes and wars for almost a millennium. It’s impressive 1,500 ft long and 750 ft wide walls integrate a triple ringed defense structure which is supported by an astonishing 99 bastions.
ACCOMODATIONS
The Thar Haveli at Suryagarh, Jaisalmer, evokes a profound nostalgia. Perfectly appointed rooms are equipped with up-to-date modern conveniences and look out onto wide sweeping vistas of an unmatchable scrub desert. The views offer serenity and tranquillity as they look out onto a vastness of landscape that meanders infinitely. Though rooted in the present day with limpid azure infinity pools and immaculate butler service the very air of these sandstone edifices suggest the purity and grace of a venerable era.
